Bera took familiar path to lead in 7th District race

Unofficial results in the tight race for Sacramento County’s 7th Congressional District show that Rep. Ami Bera rode a familiar path to a lead in the perennial battleground seat.

As of Wednesday morning, Bera led Jones by 2,094 votes.

The Elk Grove Democrat ran up large margins in the district’s western precincts. In an area south of Elk Grove Boulevard, for example, Bera topped Jones by hundreds of votes.

Jones, meanwhile, polled strongly in Orangevale and other northern parts of the district as well as its rural areas.

Tuesday’s voting patterns were similar to those in 2012 and 2014, when Bera narrowly respectively defeated then-Rep. Dan Lungren and two years later held off a challenge from former Rep. Doug Ose.

The map below shows unofficial precinct results as of Wednesday morning. Thousands of late-arriving mail and provisional ballots remain to be counted in the county. Click on a precinct for vote tallies.
