Interactive: How John Moorlach pulled off Senate surprise

State Sen. John Moorlach, R-Costa Mesa, won last week’s special primary election in Orange County’s 37th Senate District.

Former Orange County Supervisor John Moorlach clinched his outright win in last week’s 37th Senate District special primary election by running strongly in the district’s more coastal precincts, official results show.

Assemblyman Don Wagner, R-Irvine, polled well in the district’s Tustin and Irvine precincts but it wasn’t enough to prevent Moorlach from topping 50 percent of the vote and preventing a May 19 runoff. Moorlach represented much of the area on the Board of Supervisors.

Moorlach was sworn in Sunday in a district ceremony.
