Unemployment claims in California have soared as businesses have closed to comply with Newsom’s stay-at-home order issued two weeks ago. The order shuttered nonessential businesses like bars and hair salons to slow the spread of the coronavirus that causes COVID-19 respiratory illness.
Newsom said earlier this week that more than 1.6 million Californians have filed unemployment insurance claims, which the state is scrambling to process. In the meantime, lawmakers and advocates estimate that hundreds of thousands of Californians are struggling to pay their rent because of lost wages as a result of the virus.
