In his Friday press briefing, Newsom unveiled new guidelines for reopening schools after many districts announced plans to start fall 2020 with distance learning. Remote education is now required for schools located in counties on Newsom’s watch list, which encompasses over 80% of California’s population.

In addition to establishing virus containment standards for in-person instruction, Newsom last Monday required counties on the watch list to close malls, gyms, nail salons and indoor church worship. He also rolled back reopening statewide, ordering bars, indoor dining, movie theaters, zoos, card rooms and other entertainment centers to close in all California counties.
