Newsom’s Monday press conference comes as the state also deals with a different emergency: wildfires. On Sunday night, his office announced the Federal Emergency Management Agency was sending aid to help the state battle the Apple fire in Riverside and San Bernardino counties. That fire has forced residents to evacuate and is threatening homes, businesses and other buildings.

In Northern California, officials have also ordered evacuations in Colusa County as fire crews fight the smaller Sites Fire.

In the meantime, California is still grappling with long wait times for coronavirus test results that hamper contact tracing efforts and force hospitals to use up more protective equipment to care for patients awaiting results.

California’s cumulative COVID-19 case count has surpassed 500,000 infections, according to the California Department of Public Health. The death toll has surpassed 9,300. Last week, California reported the first death of a minor from the coronavirus.
