Watch: California Gov. Gavin Newsom provides COVID-19 update
California Gov. Gavin Newsom provided an update during a Friday press conference on the state’s efforts to contain the coronavirus.
You can watch a recording of the livestream of the conference below:
Two days ago, Newsom said that President Donald Trump’s proposal to offer $300 a week in unemployment benefits didn’t go far enough, but was better than the White House’s previous plan to make states pay $100 per week on their own.
The payments would be a significant reduction from the original $600 in weekly federal benefits provided until the end of July. The Congress and White House have been unable to reach a deal on how much to extend the payments in the next round of federal assistance.
The press conference also comes a day after news broke that Newsom’s Legislative Secretary Anthony Williams, who led the administration’s dealings with the Legislature, would be resigning at the end of the month.
In an email to staff, Newsom’s Chief of Staff Ann O’Leary said Williams was expected to leave his post after two years serving in the administration, and that the decision was due in part to the start of his children’s school year.
California Department of Public Health Director Dr. Sonia Angell also resigned recently, after it was discovered technical errors had compromised the accuracy of the state’s coronavirus case numbers.
