Watch: Gov. Gavin Newsom to give update on California wildfires, COVID-19

Gov. Gavin Newsom gave an update on California wildfires and the COVID-19 pandemic at noon on Wednesday.

He spoke as hundreds of lightning-sparked fires burn in California. In recent days, weather conditions have improved and other states have sent firefighting aid to help battle the wildfires.

Since Aug. 15, the fires have destroyed more than 1,400 buildings, burned 1.25 million acres and killed seven people. Two of the fires burning in the Bay Area, the SCU Lightning Complex and the LNU Lightning Complex, have become the second- and third-largest California wildfires on record.

Meanwhile, the COVID-19 pandemic continues to claim lives in California. As of Monday, 12,152 Californians had died from the virus, according to data from the California Department of Public Health.

On Wednesday morning, the virus disrupted proceedings in the state Legislature after someone who works in the state Senate tested positive for the coronaivrus. The Senate postponed a floor session Wednesday, less than a week before the Legislature’s end-of-session deadline.
