Gavin Newsom defies dyslexia and reads to kids in the classroom
Governor Gavin Newsom’s story of dyslexia is meeting the challenge head-on and defying the odds. Newsom who struggled with dyslexia during his school years has written a children’s book on the subject. The book, “Ben and Emma’s Big Hit,” centers on a boy who struggles to read and uses his love of baseball to overcome challenges.
For Newsom, school was a painful period for him; he recalls sitting in the back of the classroom hoping not to be chosen to read aloud.
In a 2019 video taken by Sacramento Bee reporter, Sophia Bollag, Newsom and first partner, Jennifer Seibel Newsom sit in front of a class of young schoolchildren as Newsom reads aloud from a book.
