Last batch of California stimulus checks goes out today

Tuesday marks the final day that California is mailing out Golden State Stimulus checks.

The state has mailed around 180,000 stimulus checks between Dec. 27 and Tuesday, according to Andrew LePage, spokesman for the Franchise Tax Board. On Dec. 24, the state issued about 1,400 stimulus direct deposits, he said.

“Combined, the roughly 181,400 payments in this latest round are valued at about $127 million. As of the latest round, the state has issued or announced a total of more than 8.2 million (Golden State Stimulus) checks and direct deposits valued at just over $5.9 billion,” LePage said in an emailed statement.

LePage said that “the vast majority” of stimulus payments have been issued or announced. He said that the Franchise Tax Board is continuing to work through a small number of tax returns that require additional processing to ensure eligibility.

There are also an unknown number of Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) tax filers who may be eligible, but who have until Feb. 15 to file their state return, LePage said.

“These are ITIN filers who did not have an ITIN but had applied for one by the Oct. 15, 2021, tax filing deadline,” he said.

To qualify for the stimulus, Californians must have filed their 2020 tax returns by Oct. 15, 2021. Only those who made less than $75,000 in 2020 are eligible, and you must have been a resident of the state for more than half of 2020 as well as a resident of the state at the time the payment is issued.

The stimulus checks will total $600 for those without dependents, and $1,100 for those with dependents.
