The battle over Prop. 30 begins + Rendon to support Youth Jobs Corps rollout
Good morning and welcome to the A.M. Alert!
PROP 30 GETS ENDORSEMENT, OPPOSITION
With four months to go before the November election both sides are readying for the fight over Proposition 30, which would tax the rich to fund a “Clean Air Initiative” featuring a rebate program for zero-emission vehicles.
In support is the State Building and Construction Trades Council of California, which issued an endorsement on Tuesday.
President Andrew Meredith described Prop 30 in a statement as “a transformational ballot measure that will provide good-paying green jobs to help build the charging station infrastructure we need across the state to reduce emissions and fight climate change.”
Meanwhile, California Chamber of Commerce CEO Jennifer Barrera spoke for the opposition: “California already has the highest personal income tax, gas tax, and sales tax rates in the country. We are dealing with record high inflation and economists are predicting a recession,” she said in a statement.
RENDON, OTHERS TO PROMOTE YOUTH JOBS CORPS PROGRAM
Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon, D-Lakewood, is set to appear alongside former Stockton Mayor (and Gov. Gavin Newsom adviser) Michael Tubbs, Sen. Lena Gonzalez, D-Long Beach, and others on Wednesday to announce a statewide recruitment effort for cities and counties that were awarded $35 million to create the #CaliforniansForAll Youth Jobs Corps.
“The #CaliforniansForAll Youth Jobs Corps is an innovative partnership between the State of California and local governments to help underserved youth and young adults find employment. Through the program, young people will gain critical job skills while making a positive, lasting impact in their communities,” according to a statement announcing the event.
In addition to the $35 million for cities and counties, California’s 2021-22 budget included $150 million for youth workforce development in its 13 largest cities, according to the statement.
QUOTE OF THE DAY
“.@GavinNewsom left California on Friday with his family, but despite repeated questions from the Sacramento press corps, it’s still unclear what day he will return to the state, along with his current whereabouts. All we know is he’ll be out for the rest of the week.”
