NEWSOM ANNOUNCES $47 MILLION FOR HOMELESS HOUSING FOR CALIFORNIA TRIBES

Gov. Gavin Newsom on Tuesday announced $47 million in new funding for California tribes in order to prevent and end homelessness.

That includes $20 million in tribal homelessness assistance grants to fund projects in 16 tribal communities, and four Project Homekey grants totaling $27 million to fund 75 homes for members of four tribes, including homeless youths.

“California is investing in getting people off the streets and into safe housing throughout the state with a particular focus on Native Americans and populations disproportionately impacted by homelessness,” Newsom said in a statement.

The grant funding comes after Newsom earlier this month announced that he was withholding state homelessness funding to cities and counties because he felt that they were not ambitious enough.

Newsom’s office said that an additional $20 million in tribal grants will be released in 2023.

“Tribal nations in California have been actively working to address housing insecurity, overcrowding and homelessness, but funding for housing and homelessness has often been an obstacle,” said Business, Consumer Services and Housing Agency Secretary Lourdes Castro Ramírez in a statement.
