As his own victory looks increasingly likely, Adam Schiff campaigns for other Democrats
Good morning and welcome to the A.M. Alert!
WITH HIS OWN VICTORY LOOKING LIKELY, SCHIFF CAMPAIGNS FOR OTHERS
Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Burbank, looks to have the race for California’s junior Senate seat all but sewn up. Polls show him consistently way ahead of his Republican rival, retired baseball great Steve Garvey.
With victory likely, Schiff, who made a name for himself as a nemesis of former President Donald Trump, has turned his attention toward campaigning for other candidates, both within and without the Golden State.
Inside California, Schiff recently attended campaign events for Democratic congressional candidates George Whitesides (who is running in CA-27) and Rep. Raul Ruiz, D-Indio, who is seeking reelection in CA-25.
“Adam will continue to travel throughout California up until Election Day to campaign for House candidates in an effort to flip the House,” according to the Schiff campaign.
Schiff also is throwing his fundraising prowess behind other Democrats’ Senate campaigns, working to support Sens. Bob Casey of Pennsylvania and Sherrod Brown of Ohio, according to his campaign. That includes visits to Ohio and Pennsylvania in recent weeks on behalf of those candidates.
Democrats are in the political fight of their lives to keep control of the upper house of Congress.
WEBER HOPES FOR A ‘BORING’ ELECTION
The time has come: California’s vote-by-mail ballots are officially going out to registered voters across the state. (This reporter can confirm having received his ballot.)
According to the California Secretary of State’s Office, which supervises elections, the election begins as soon as the ballots go out. Secretary of State Shirley Weber in a statement said that California voters should make a plan to vote once they receive theirs.
“I encourage all active, eligible voters to make a voting plan so they can ensure their voice is heard,” Weber said.
Ballots must be postmarked by no later than Nov. 5 to be counted. Beginning Oct. 8, you can also drop your ballot off at your county’s ballot drop box location. Counties will also open up polling locations closer to Election Day.
As always, you can track your ballot here.
In a recently recorded video, Weber offered up her best wishes for a “boring” election this year.
“We’re looking forward to Nov. 5, to having a wonderful, safe and, in some ways, boring election, where there’s nothing unusual happening other than you taking advantage of the opportunity to vote,” she said.
TRUMP TO RETURN TO CALIFORNIA
Trump is expected to make another California pit stop this weekend, with a planned rally to be held at Calhoun Ranch in Coachella on Saturday.
The visit comes just a month after his last visit to the Golden State, where he suggested re-routing the Columbia River into California to deal with the state’s water problems.
The announcement also came on the same day that Trump, while speaking to conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt, said that criminal behavior is genetic.
“You know now a murderer, I believe this, it’s in their genes. And we got a lot of bad genes in our country right now,” Trump said while speaking about undocumented immigrants, according to NBC News.
The White House condemned the remark as “echoing the grotesque rhetoric of fascists and violent white supremacists,” according to Politico.
Trump campaign spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt told Politico that Trump was “referring to murderers, not migrants.”
QUOTE OF THE DAY
