Bernie Sanders, AOC move ‘Fighting Oligarchy’ tour to Folsom
Sen. Bernie Sanders and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez will appear next week in Folsom after they moved their ‘Fighting Oligarchy’ tour stop from Auburn.
In an email to supporters, Sanders said he and Ocasio-Cortez would speak at Folsom Lake College’s athletic track on College Parkway on Tuesday. Speeches begin at 6 p.m., and doors open at 3:30 p.m.
The outspoken progressives have traveled across the western U.S. since March, speaking to thousands about President Donald Trump’s rapid disassembling of the federal government and his billionaire adviser Elon Musk’s unprecedented power to dismantle social programs like Social Security and Medicare.
The tour has taken Sanders and Ocasio-Cortez to both blue enclaves like Denver and smaller conservative cities like Nampa, Idaho, a Boise suburb where most of the 120,000 registered voters there cast ballots for Trump, according to county election data.
Sanders spokesperson Anna Bahr said in an email the event moved to accommodate a larger-than-expected crowd as the tour has drawn tens of thousands of attendees. The duo was originally slated to speak at the Gold Country Fairgrounds.
Sanders is a Vermont independent who caucuses with the Democrats, and Ocasio-Cortez is a New York Democrat who represents parts of Queens, the Bronx and Westchester County. The two have often clashed with party leaders, both historically and more recently over the Democrats’ response to the Republican budget blueprint, which calls for $800 million in cuts to Medicaid over the next 10 years.
A recent NBC poll put the Democrats’ approval rating at a historically low 27%.
The event will take place outside, and those attending are encouraged to bring chairs and blankets, Sanders said in his email. Free parking is available on-site on a first come, first serve basis, and street parking is also available within walking distance.
