Lawmakers and local government officials will be in Fresno today to talk up the state’s road needs and goals for the Legislature’s special session on transportation.

Assembly Speaker Toni Atkins, D-San Diego, Assemblyman Jimmy Gomez, D-Los Angeles, and Assemblyman Henry Perea, D-Fresno, are scheduled to speak, along with State Transportation Agency Secretary Brian Kelly and several supervisors from Merced, Fresno and Stanislaus counties.

Members of local construction unions also will share the Fresno stage. Any increase in road-repair funding that emerges from the special session would mean more projects for union workers.

STATE OF JEFFERSON: Advocates for converting parts of Northern California and Oregon into a 51st state will hold a “Liberty BBQ” on Saturday to discuss the issue with Placer County residents.

The Placer County Committee for the State of Jefferson will host Saturday’s event at the Placer County Fairgrounds. Advocates will be on hand to talk about the financing, governance, and “other nuts and bolts issues that concern the formation of the 51st State of Jefferson,” organizers said.

Placer County is one of the counties in Northern California that the Jeffersonians envision as part of a 51st state that they believe will allow residents to be better represented in state government.

CELEBRATIONS: Happy birthday to Rep. Julia Brownley, D-Santa Monica, who turns 63.
