What’s the California Republican Party to do when its convention headliner backs out at the last minute?

Book John Bolton, who thought about running for president next year – but ultimately decided not to.

Party officials said Monday that Bolton will replace Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker as a convention speaker on Saturday night in Anaheim.

“I greatly appreciate Ambassador Bolton for agreeing to join us at CRP 2015 Fall Convention on such short notice,” party chairman Jim Brulte said in a prepared statement. “With Ambassador Bolton’s experience in foreign policy and national security, I’m looking forward to hearing his thoughts on the important international issues facing America today.”

The party said Walker withdrew “to focus his efforts on the early primary states.” The candidate is flagging in public opinion polls.
