Former ‘Bridezilla’ charged with insurance fraud

A former “Bridezilla” who was left at the altar in a 2007 episode of the wedding-themed reality television show has a new problem: 14 felony counts of insurance fraud.

Anita Maxwell, 55, turned herself in to Los Angeles County authorities Tuesday to face charges that she lied to her doctor and submitted fraudulent documents as part of a scheme to reap workers compensation benefits that she didn’t deserve, according to an announcement from the California Department of Insurance.

Insurance investigators say Maxwell fraudulently claimed in 2012 that she injured her neck, back and shoulder while caring for a patient and received more than $40,000 in undeserved workers comp benefits.

“Taking advantage of the workers’ compensation system is not only illegal, but costly to all Californians who pay for this fraud through higher premiums,” said a statement from Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones. “These types of fraudulent claims are an insult to legitimately injured workers.”
