Democratic state Sen. Richard Pan likely owes his Nov. 4 victory over Roger Dickinson in part to stronger support from the district’s Republican minority, according to a review of final Sacramento County election results.

The Democrat-on-Democrat race for the 6th Senate District was among the most competitive and expensive in the state. In the end, Pan won with 53.8 percent of the vote in the Sacramento-based district, where Democrats comprise 48.3 percent of registered voters, Republicans 24.9 percent, and no-party preference voters 21.6 percent.

There’s no way to tell how people of different party affiliations voted Nov. 4. But final election results from Sacramento County – which makes up 95 percent of the Senate district – show larger-than-average Republican participation in precincts where Pan topped Dickinson.

Republicans represented 29 percent of the turnout in the 281 precincts carried by Pan. In the 84 precincts where Dickinson won, Republicans represented about 21 percent of the vote.

Democratic voters represented about half of the Nov. 4 voters in the pro-Pan precincts and 56 percent of the vote in the pro-Dickinson precincts.

There was little difference in the precincts’ no-party preference turnout: 16.5 percent in pro-Pan precincts and 17.6 percent in pro-Dickinson precincts.

The Sacramento region’s other major same-party legislative contest was the 9th Assembly District, where Jim Cooper defeated fellow Democrat Darrell Fong. Sacramento County’s final results show smaller differences in the voter makeup of the Nov. 4 precincts carried by Cooper or Fong. About 15 percent of the district’s voters are in San Joaquin County.
