California legislators are earning their paychecks this week by enduring the government equivalent of grueling two-a-day practices.

The Legislature is taking up nearly 500 bills in daylong marathon sessions with a looming Friday deadline to pass legislation out of its house of origin. Both houses expect to wrap up the sessions today.

Through Wednesday, the Senate voted on nearly 140 bills and intends to finish off as many as 50 today to avoid calling another session on Friday. Similarly, today the Assembly hopes to conclude votes on the remaining bills of the 300 it must take up before the deadline.
