A funeral mass will be held Tuesday for Greg Schmidt, the long-serving secretary of the state Senate who died Wednesday, his family announced Friday.

Schmidt, 69, succumbed to cancer, two years after retiring as the Senate’s top administrative officer for 18 years. He had been a legislative staffer for more than four decades.

A vigil service will be held at 6:30 p.m. Monday at St. Francis of Assisi Church, 1006 26th St., near Sutter’s Fort, followed by a funeral mass at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the same church.

The Schmidt family said that donations in his honor may be made to either the Cristo Rey High School Work-Study Program, 8475 Jackson Road, Sacramento, CA 95826 (www.crhss.org) or Bishop O’Dowd High School Alumni Scholarship Endowment, 9500 Stearns Ave., Oakland, CA 94605 (www.bishopodowd.org/donate).
