Sacramento County is getting a new district attorney for the first time since 2014.
The race to succeed District Attorney Anne Marie Schubert, who is running for state attorney general, will be determined by the June 7 primary election. Because only two candidates are running, the candidate who gets the most votes will take office.
Here’s who is running:
- Alana Mathews, a former deputy district attorney
- Thien Ho, deputy district attorney
On April 27, the two candidates discussed the issues in a live virtual debate.
The moderator was Marcos Bretón, the California Opinion Editor for McClatchy Newspapers. The candidates will field questions from members of the Sacramento Bee Editorial Board.
Thien Ho is a deputy district attorney who prosecuted the case that sent Golden State Killer Joseph James DeAngelo to prison for life.
Alana Mathews is a former deputy district attorney who is not accepting donations from law enforcement unions and is endorsed by progressive groups.
