Initial reports got Sacramento’s voter turnout wrong. See how people voted in your area

In the first days after the June primary election, multiple media outlets ran stories based on early counts predicting low voter turnout in Sacramento and statewide.

It turned out not so bad.

About 38.88% of registered voters in Sacramento County voted in the June primary, the second-highest turnout during a gubernatorial primary since 2002, according to final election results. Only 2018 saw a higher turnout, when 41.94% of local voters turned out.

Ballots can be mailed until election day under state law, so it takes time for final turnout numbers to materialize.

While Sacramento County published final results a few days ago, other counties had several more days left to report. Even so, statewide turnout stood at 33.08% on July 6, higher than the average turnout of 32.83% in the last five gubernatorial primary elections.

In Sacramento County, voter turnout tended to be highest in wealthier neighborhoods such as East Sacramento, Land Park, Gold River and Folsom. Turnout was lowest in lower-income areas like North Sacramento, Fruitridge, Florin and North Highlands.

Among precincts with at least 1,000 voters, turnout was lowest in the precinct surrounding Johnston Park in North Sacramento, where about 17.5% of voters cast ballots. Turnout was highest in the precinct just north of Curtis Park, where 70.9% of voters cast ballots.
