Much of the Sacramento region saw healthy — but not outstanding — voter turnout in November, according to election results.
The percentage of eligible adults in Placer and El Dorado counties who voted in November was higher than usual for a midterm election. Turnout among eligible adults was relatively typical in Sacramento and Yolo counties.
▪ In Placer County, about 61% of eligible voters cast ballots, better than the average of 55% during the previous eight elections.
▪ In El Dorado County, about 62% of eligible voters cast ballots, better than the average of 54% during the previous eight elections.
▪ In Sacramento County, about 44% of eligible voters cast ballots, similar to the average of 44% during the previous eight elections.
▪ In Yolo County, about 44% of eligible voters cast ballots, similar to the average of 45% during the previous eight elections.
Citizens need to register before they can vote. Not everyone registers, so there are more eligible voters than there are registered voters.
Another way of looking at voter turnout is by calculating the percentage of registered voters who cast a ballot. By that measure, turnout was relatively low in the Sacramento region in November, compared to previous midterm elections.
However, the number of registered voters has gone up markedly throughout the state and Sacramento region over the last several years, as new laws made registering to vote more convenient.
Adding registered voters will lower the turnout rate if newly-registered residents don’t actually vote.
Voter turnout is highly correlated with income: Wealthier people vote more often.
The Bee matched up November voting results by precinct with ZIP codes. The Bee determined the center point of each precinct and placed it in the ZIP code where the center fell. The analysis excluded ZIP codes with fewer than 1,000 registered voters.
The Sacramento County ZIP codes with the highest turnout among registered voters were:
▪ 95819 - East Sacramento - 77% of registered voters cast ballots.
▪ 95683 - Sloughhouse - 74% turnout.
▪ 95864 - South Arden - 71% turnout.
▪ 95693 - Wilton - 71% turnout.
▪ 95818 - Land Park/Curtis Park - 69% turnout.
The Sacramento County ZIP codes with the lowest turnout among registered voters were:
▪ 95832 - Meadowview - 34% of registered voters cast ballots.
▪ 95838 - Del Paso Heights - 36% turnout.
▪ 95824 - Lemon Hill - 37% turnout.
▪ 95815 - Old North Sacramento - 38% turnout.
▪ 95823 - Parkway/Valley Hi - 39% turnout.
