A Calipatria State Prison inmate stabbed a correctional officer in the head and face in a Thursday morning attack, according to a California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation news release.
Three correctional officers approached inmate Douglas Compton, 38, after he refused to leave an out-of-bounds section of the general population yard of the Imperial County prison, according to the release. Compton, who was sentenced in Los Angeles County in 2013 to 112 years to life for second-degree murder, attacked one of the officers.
Compton kept fighting even as officers used batons, pepper spray and other force on him, punching two other officers, according to the release.
An officer in an observation tower fired one shot, which didn’t injure anyone, that stopped the attack, according to the release.
In all, five officers and a sergeant sustained injuries, according to the release. Compton was cut on his forehead and exposed to the pepper spray.
Two inmate-made weapons were found at the scene. The attack is being investigated as an attempted homicide, according to the release.
