Positive COVID-19 test shuts down California health department office in Natomas

A California Department of Public Health office in Natomas is closed after an employee tested positive for COVID-19, according to emails sent by managers.

An employee at the department’s Center for Health Statistics and Informatics received positive test results on Wednesday, according to an email from the department to staff.

The email, sent at 3:43 p.m. Wednesday, directed employees to “leave the building as soon as possible,” and instructed them to dial in to a 4 p.m. conference call for more information.

The Department of Public Health did not immediately respond to an email.

The Natomas office is separate from the department’s Emergency Preparedness Office, located downtown, which is the center of the department’s coronavirus response efforts.

The office processes birth and death records, marriage certificates, vital records data and statistical reports, according to its website.

The employee who tested positive was last in the office on April 3, according to the email.

The office remained closed through the week. It’s scheduled to reopen Tuesday after a deep-clean, according to Agurto’s email.

The email directed employees to telework if they could, and said those who couldn’t would be paid under the federal Families First Coronavirus Response Act.

As is standard in state offices where employees have tested positive, the email doesn’t provide any identifying information about the person with the positive test. It informed employees they would be contacted individually if they were determined to have been in contact with the person.
