California state government offices to remain closed Tuesday following protests

California state offices in Sacramento and other cities will remain closed Tuesday, according to a news release.

Offices in West Sacramento also will remain closed, along with those in all of Los Angeles County, nine Bay Area counties and San Diego County, according to the Human Resources Department release.

Human Resources Department Director Eraina Ortega first announced Sunday night that many state offices would be closed Monday as protesters and others were marching and demonstrating in Sacramento and other cities. Some people were breaking into buildings in downtown Sacramento and stealing things.

Michael Ault, executive director of the Downtown Sacramento Partnership, estimated 130 businesses in downtown Sacramento had doors and windows broken, with damage estimated at around $10 million.

Sacramento and Los Angeles and other cities instituted curfews for Monday night.

Monday’s email says offices in “city centers and large population areas” within those counties will remain closed, along with offices in the city of San Bernardino.

“Please be mindful of local curfews and adjust schedules accordingly, including sending staff home early when necessary,” Ortega said in a Monday night email to personnel officers.

Workers who can’t telework will be provided administrative time off, which is paid time off, the email says.
