A California Highway Patrol officer who was seriously injured after being struck by a vehicle two months ago in south Sacramento is expected to be released from a hospital on Wednesday.

Officer Aaron Weikert, a 12-year veteran with the CHP, was investigating a fatal hit-and-run crash in the early hours of Oct. 16 when he was hit by a suspected drunk driver.

Weikert suffered major injuries throughout his entire body and “has a long road of recovery ahead of him,” officials said Tuesday in a news release from the CHP South Sacramento office. The officer is scheduled to be released Wednesday morning from UC Davis Medical in Sacramento.

“He wishes to thank everyone for the support and prayers as he recovers from his injuries,” CHP officials said in the news release. “Officer Weikert’s three children all wanted one thing this Christmas, and that was to have their father home.”

Jason Wullenwaber, 27, of Sacramento is the driver accused in the crash that injured the CHP officer. He was arrested at the scene on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs, the CHP has said. Wullenwaber suffered minor injuries in the crash.

The fatal hit-and-run crash involving a bicyclist was reported shortly before 11:30 p.m. in the northbound lanes of Stockton Boulevard, just north of Requa Way. About an hour later, Weikert was standing outside his patrol vehicle when a 2007 Ford Mustang heading north on Stockton Boulevard struck the officer at a high rate of speed, the CHP said.
