UPDATE: The recall notice was updated to reflect that manufacturer Dakota Foods was making the recall, not Hy-Vee itself.

Dakota Foods recalled Hy-Vee store brand braided pretzels from stores in eight states for a possible mistake that could have “serious or life-threatening” consequences.

Dakota’s FDA-posted recall notice says “it was discovered through a consumer complaint that product containing milk was distributed in packaging that did not reveal the presence of milk.”

While a negligible problem for people without a food allergy, milk as an undeclared allergen is a problem for those with a milk allergy. As the notice says, “people who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to milk run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products.”

This involves 10-ounce bags of Hy-Vee’s Honey Mustard Braided Pretzels, lot Nos. D2162022, best by 8/9/2023, and D3332022, best by 12/1/2023; Dill Pickle Braided Pretzels, lot No. D2562022, best by 9/14/2023; and Salt and Vinegar Braided Pretzels, lot No. D3252022, best by 11/29/2023.

These went to stores in Missouri, Illinois, Kansas, Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, South Dakota and Wisconsin.

If you have the pretzels and there’s no chance someone with a milk allergy will eat them, munch on happily. If there is a chance of that, return them to the store for a full refund.

If you have questions, call Dakota at 800-446-2779, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Central time.
