Update: No fatalities in big-rig crash on I-80 in Solano County as lanes reopen, CHP says

A violent crash Friday morning involving a big rig veering across multiple lanes of Interstate 80, striking at least five vehicles, has blocked multiple lanes of the freeway in both directions near Dixon, according to Caltrans and the California Highway Patrol.

“Multiple vehicles and big rigs” were involved in the crash, with one big rig crashing through the center divide on I-80 near Pedrick Road after traveling across all westbound lanes and stopping on the eastbound side in Solano County, CHP’s Golden Gate Division said in a tweet around 11:10 a.m.

In a Facebook post around 12:10 p.m., CHP’s Solano office reported that only moderate injuries and no fatalities have been reported in the crash, an almost miraculous update given the extreme damage sustained by at least two passenger vehicles at the scene, images showed. Westbound traffic has reopened while eastbound I-80 was reduced to one lane at that time.

Photos from the CHP showed an Amazon big-rig jackknifed in the center divide with another tractor-trailer disabled after colliding with it. Another photo showed the back half of a passenger vehicle that had been split from the front, with a child’s car seat resting on top of the exposed back seat.

The CHP’s incident log reports the crash occurred just before 10:30 a.m., describing the crash as a head-on collision in which a big rig heading westbound crossed over into eastbound traffic.

Images taken at the scene by a KCRA helicopter showed the two mangled big rigs still in the roadway by midday, as well as one sedan that had been split in half being towed away on a flatbed.

All eastbound lanes were blocked until 11:45 a.m. when one lane was reopened. Two lanes of westbound traffic remain blocked. Motorists are urged to take alternate routes, with no estimated time of reopening and serious delays expected until the roadway is clear.
