Traffic is stalled early Monday, May 4, 2020, on Highway 50 near Howe Avenue in Sacramento County after a crash involving a big rig hauling scrap metal and a wrong-way driver, according to the CHP and Caltrans.

A head-on crash early Monday morning stalled traffic on both sides of Highway 50 for hours, authorities say.

The collision was first reported just after 2:30 a.m. near Howe Avenue as involving a big rig and a wrong-way driver on the westbound side of the highway, according to the California Highway Patrol’s incident log.

Caltrans in a tweet just after 3 a.m. called the incident “a multi-vehicle crash involving a scrap metal hauler,” and said all lanes were closed in both directions.

In an update, the CHP said all westbound lanes were back open as of 7:20 a.m. but that the eastbound side was still reduced to one side. All lanes were reopened fully just before 9 a.m.

Crews worked to clear wreckage and oil spilled from the big rig, according to the CHP.

The CHP activity log refers to the crash as a major-injury collision. Further details about the crash were not immediately available.
