Update: Interstate 5 reopens near Sacramento International Airport after big rig crash
Traffic was blocked for several hours Monday on northbound Interstate 5 near Sacramento International Airport after a tractor-trailer overturned during the morning commute.
The big rig rolled onto its side shortly after 7:15 a.m. and was partially hanging off the freeway at the Yolo Bypass, between the airport and Woodland, according to the California Highway Patrol’s activity log.
Lanes reopened shortly before 1:30 p.m., Caltrans said in a tweet. Traffic had been diverted for a time on to County Road 22 in Yolo County.
No injuries were reported, the CHP said.
Caltrans traffic cameras showed gridlock extended past the northbound off-ramp to the airport for several hours, and officials said backups could continue into the afternoon rush hour.
Drivers heading to the airport from Sacramento may take Garden Highway or Del Paso Road to Powerline Road, then head north to westbound Bayou Way, a frontage road along I-5 that leads to Airport Boulevard.
From the north, drivers can exit Highway 99 onto West Elkhorn Boulevard, then head south on Powerline Road to get to Bayou Way.
