Caltrans construction work on I-5 this weekend: Here’s what to know to avoid delays

Caltrans and construction crews are planning weekend road work on Interstate 5 in downtown Sacramento, which will result in lane and ramp closures starting at 10 p.m. Friday.

Construction for the Interstate 5 Corridor Enhancement project will be taking place on the northbound side of the freeway from the Highway 50/Capital City Freeway interchange to J Street.

The closures include: On-ramps to northbound I-5 at P and W streets; the 15th Street on-ramp to westbound Highway 50; the connector from westbound Highway 50 to northbound I-5; and the off-ramp from northbound I-5 to J Street.

Motorists will be restricted to 55 mph and fewer lanes of traffic. Residents near the work area may hear loud construction noise and beeping sounds day and night, Caltrans said.

Construction is scheduled to end by 5 a.m. Monday.

Motorists are encouraged to use alternate routes, such as Highway 99 and the Capital City Freeway, as well as Interstate 80.

The work is part of Caltrans’ $370 million overhaul of 67 freeway miles, which includes the addition of sound walls and carpool lanes.

More information on the project is available on the FixSac5 website.
