This Sacramento County bridge will close until next year. Here’s the timeline and detours
The Franklin Boulevard bridge in south Sacramento County will be closed for construction starting Friday.
The portion, about two miles north of the San Joaquin County line, overlooks the Mokelumne River.
The closure is part of a construction project for a new bridge, according to a county news release, which is expected to start in the summer, around May or June.
“SacDOT planned to replace the bridge this year,” the county stated in the release, “but structural issues and pavement damage, due to wear and tear over the years, has forced the County to immediately close this stretch of road.”
The bridge will reopen after it is rebuilt. Its completion is slated for fall 2024.
What this means for traffic
There will be detours.
According to the release:
- Heavy trucks going southbound must take Twin Cities Road to go southbound on Interstate 5
- Heavy trucks going northbound must take Walnut Grove Road to go northbound I-5
- Regular cars can use Desmond Road as a detour
