A new lane split is coming to Highway 50 in Sacramento County. Here’s where and when
The California Department of Transportation is preparing motorists for more delays starting this weekend on Highway 50, according to a Monday news release.
Another scheduled traffic lane split will be in place from the Watt Avenue exit to 65th Street starting Saturday. The configuration could last months as Caltrans moves forward on the multi-year Fix50 project.
The other lane split on Highway 50 that runs along downtown and midtown, will remain.
What you can expect on Highway 50
Drivers can expect signs on the road directing traffic of the split ahead.
Directions on the road will say the following, according to Caltrans:
- Motorists on westbound US 50 exiting Howe Avenue/Sacramento State University must stay in the outside two right lanes at the traffic split.
- Motorists on westbound US 50 driving toward downtown Sacramento will minimize traffic delays if they stay in the left two inside bypass lanes at the traffic split.
Work zone speed limits will be enforced by the California Highway Patrol. Speed limits in the construction area will be reduced to 55 miles per hour.
Crews will work morning and night shifts. When traveling through the construction zones, Caltrans is asking motorists to be vigilant of commercial work vehicles on site.
Motorists can use the Quick Map website or download the application to stay up to date with construction updates.
What is the project?
The $433 million project will rehabilitate the highway pavement, improve drainage, add lighting and other enchantments and expected to be complete between December 2024 and early 2025. Here’s who is funding it:
- State Highway Operation and Protection Protection Program’s Roadway Rehabilitation program
- Solutions for Congested Corridors Program
- Senate Bill 1
- The Road Repair and Accountability Act of 2017
- The City of Sacramento’s Measure A Transportation Sales Tax Program managed by the Sacramento Transportation Authority
