Winter storm warning continues as heavy snow and rainstorms pummel Northern California
Storms are expected to continue over Northern California as weather forecasters warn of hazardous winter weather through Monday.
The National Weather Service declared a winter storm warning for much of the region as heavy snow was predicted in the Sierra Nevada and rainstorms were set to pummel the Valley.
After a week of rough weather, traffic in the area was still chaotic Sunday, with chain restrictions in place on Interstate 80 north of Placer County as westbound big rigs were being turned at the Nevada state line.
NWS forecasters said major travel delays were likely and chain controls and road closures were possible as the storm bore down.
There could be up to 6 inches of snow in the foothills and 5 feet of snow at high mountain elevations, according to NWS forecasts.
In the Sacramento Valley, rainstorms might extend commutes and cause minor roadway flooding. For the 24 hours ending at 4 p.m. Sunday, Sacramento received .99 inches of rain, according to NWS numbers. Sacramento Executive Airport reported .86 inches, while Sacramento International Airport saw 1.39 inches.
The largest rainfall inch count locally was at Vacaville Airport, which reported 3.06 inches.
