Spinouts, flooding: Rain puts damper on morning traffic throughout Sacramento area

It’s slow going for Sacramento commuters Monday morning, with a number of spinouts, collisions and flooded freeway ramps slogging traffic on the wet roadways.

As rain continues to fall at a moderate clip, Caltrans and the California Highway Patrol have reported a number of traffic incidents and closures before 8 a.m.

Caltrans says the Norwood Avenue on-ramp to westbound Interstate 80 is closed due to flooding, and the ramp from Stockton Boulevard onto eastbound Highway 50 is closed due to an overturned big rig. No estimated time of reopening has been given for either ramp as of 8 a.m.

The Sacramento Fire Department tweeted that no one was injured in the big-rig collision, but posted photos that appear to show that the truck’s trailer was snapped in half.

The CHP’s incident log shows a handful of other flooding incidents over the past 24 hours, including multiple spots on Highway 99, lanes and ramps of the Capital City Freeway, and Highway 50 near the Interstate 5 interchange.

Just before 8 a.m., Caltrans traffic cameras showed delays heading into Sacramento: on westbound I-80 near Citrus Heights; westbound Highway 50 between Rancho Cordova and Sacramento; and northbound I-5 and Highway 99 in south Sacramento.

No long-term lane closures were in place near any of those backups, but CHP’s incident log shows a number of minor crashes and spinouts.

Sacramento Executive Airport got just under an inch of rain Sunday - more precipitation than the previous six months combined - and heavy rainfall continued Monday morning as an atmospheric river system continues to impact Northern California.

The storm is expected to wind down by Monday afternoon or early evening, but showers are predicted to continue through the middle of the week ahead of another strong, wet system reaching the valley by about Friday, according to the National Weather Service.
