High 90s today, low 70s and rainy next week: Roller-coaster weather hits Sacramento

Brace for hot weather Friday afternoon and most of this weekend in Northern California.

Then, brace for the weather to change very suddenly.

Predicted earlier in the week to max out at 95 degrees, Sacramento’s high is forecast to hit 97 on Friday, according to the National Weather Service. The all-time record high at Sacramento Executive Airport for May 8 is 96 degrees, reached in 2001, though downtown Sacramento hit 100 that same day, according to NWS data.

But after a 92-degree high in Saturday’s forecast, things will cool off quickly in Sacramento. It might even rain.

The NWS predicts a high of 86 degrees Sunday, falling to 79 by Monday and all the way down to 70 by Tuesday, a 27-degree drop in a four-day span, from almost 20 degrees above to 10 degrees below average. Sacramento usually sits in the upper 70s during this part of May.

Monday will also see a chance of light rain showers near the capital, with showers even more likely on Tuesday, NWS forecasts show.

Two very different weather systems are to blame, the NWS Sacramento office said in a tweet. The first will wrap up by about Saturday; Sunday will be more seasonally normal, while the cool and possibly wet pattern will last next Monday through Wednesday.
