Triple-digit heat in Sacramento forecast for next 3 days. When will it cool down?

After a hot three-day weekend, Northern California is getting hotter.

Temperatures in downtown Sacramento reached 100 degrees on Memorial Day, tying the all-time record for May 25, according to the National Weather Service.

Afternoon highs are expected to reach triple digits again Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, according to the latest National Weather Service forecasts. Highs of 102 degrees Tuesday and Wednesday, and 101 on Thursday, have prompted an excessive heat warning by the agency. Tuesday and Wednesday’s temperatures are predicted to break daily records of 101 and 100 that have stood since 1976 and 1984, respectively.

South of Sacramento, Modesto could approach 105 degrees Wednesday and Thursday.

The weather might cool quickly to end May. The NWS currently forecasts Friday to reach the low 90s in Sacramento, then dip to the low 80s or high 70s by the weekend and early next week. Saturday afternoon may even see a chance of light showers near the capital, according to the NWS.

The NWS Sacramento office notes that average highs in Sacramento during late May sit in the low- to mid-80s.

The weather service also reminds anyone headed to the river that waterways do not warm up as fast as the air temperature does. Despite triple-digit heat, they’re still running fast and cold, so life jackets are a must.
