Where cooling centers will be open in the Sacramento area as Labor Day heats up
With more hot temperatures expected during a Labor Day heat wave, city and county officials are opening cooling centers across the capital region to help residents seek refuge. Here’s an list of the centers that will be open, with days and times noted:
Downtown Sacramento: Tsakopoulos Library Galleria, 828 I St., noon to 8 p.m., Sunday and Monday
- North Sacramento: Hagginwood Community Center, 3271 Marysville Blvd., noon to 8 p.m., Sunday and Monday
- Oak Park (ages 12-24 only): Wind Youth Center, 3671 Fifth Ave., 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.
- Elk Grove: Wackford Center, 9014 Bruceville Road, 2 to 8 p.m., Saturday through Tuesday
- Folsom: City Senior & Arts Center, 48 Natoma St., noon to 7 p.m., Saturday through Tuesday
- Rancho Cordova: City Hall, 2729 Prospect Park Drive, noon to 6 p.m., Sunday through Tuesday
- Citrus Heights: Community Center, 6300 Fountain Square Drive, noon to 6 p.m., Sunday through Monday
West Sacramento: City Hall, 1110 W. Capitol Ave, noon to 9 p.m., Sunday through Monday
Davis: Senior Center, 646 A St., noon to 6 p.m., Friday through Tuesday
Roseville: Tower Theatre, 417 Vernon St., noon to 6 p.m., Sunday through Tuesday
Air conditioning, seating, water, restrooms and WiFi will be available at most locations.
Sites will follow the guidelines set out by the California Department of Public Health because of the pandemic and masks will be required, officials said.
The guidelines are similar to those issued for businesses: individual temperature and symptom screenings will take place, cleaning and disinfecting protocols be followed, and continued adherence to physical distancing will be enforced, “in addition to addressing all language and cultural barriers,” said Sacramento County spokeswoman Janna Haynes.
Temperatures could are expected to reach 111 degrees Sunday in Sacramento, according to the National Weather Service’s excessive heat warning. The heat would surpass the all-time record of 103 degrees for Labor Day and the record for a September day, which reached 109 degrees on Sept. 1, 2017.
