Northern California to receive more rain, mountain snow early this week
Northern California is in for more wintry days ahead, as rain is forecast in Sacramento and elsewhere in the Valley and snow is expected over mountain passes early this week.
The National Weather Service’s Sacramento office forecast widespread rain accompanied by gusty winds starting midday Monday and lasting into Tuesday morning.
“Looks like NorCal will see a break from wet weather today and into at least midday Monday,” weather service meteorologists wrote in a Sunday morning forecast discussion. “Attention then turns to a wetter system later Monday into Tuesday that will feature rain, snow, and wind.”
A preliminary seven-day forecast for Sacramento shows significant chances for rain starting about 4 p.m. Monday, with a total of .8 inches of rain possible by Tuesday evening.
Moderate amounts of snow are expected to accumulate over the Sierra Nevada and other mountain ranges in the region. Weather service forecasters predicted 4 to 8 inches of snow along Interstate 80 at Donner pass and Highway 50 at Echo Summit. Mountain peaks could see up to 2 feet of snow.
The weather service expects between a half-inch and an inch of rain in most Valley communities, while those in the foothills and mountains could see between 2 and 3 inches of rain.
By Wednesday, chances of rain in Northern California will be reduced, and the rest of the week should remain dry.
