Strong thunderstorm in Sacramento County drops brief bout of heavy hail

A flash of pea-sized hail fell Monday afternoon across parts of Sacramento County amid a strong thunderstorm.

The National Weather Service issued a hail advisory just before 2 p.m. for a large portion of northeastern Sacramento County including Elk Grove, Citrus Heights, Rancho Cordova, Fair Oaks, Orangevale and Folsom, as well as El Dorado Hills in El Dorado County.

A thunderstorm heading east from the Florin area in south Sacramento County was first spotted shortly before 2 p.m., according to a weather service bulletin.

The storm also brought 30 mph gusts to affected areas.

The advisory was allowed to expire at 2:45 p.m. as the thunderstorm passed through. The weather service advised that isolated thunderstorms may bring hail and locally heavy rainfall to the eastern Sacramento Valley over the next few hours.

The weather service said residents faced with heavy hail should “seek shelter in a sturdy structure.”
