Nevada City goes dark, but here are 10 great photos capturing snow storm’s aftermath
The Lake Tahoe area has gotten a lot of attention over the past week, rightfully so, as a record-setting snow storm blew across the Sierra Nevada mountains beginning before Christmas.
Two hours to the west, heavy snow Monday and Tuesday dumped on the picturesque foothill towns of Grass Valley and Nevada City in Nevada County. The snow snapped trees and downed power lines as snow plows tried to clear dark roads.
Elias Funez, a multimedia reporter with The Union newspaper, captured images of the storm’s aftermath in Grass Valley and Nevada City, including historic buildings illuminated solely by gas lamps on December 27, 2021. The video above shows his photographs.
More than 50,000 homes and businesses across the Sierra mountains and foothills remained without power as of 6 a.m. Wednesday, according to Pacific Gas and Electric Co., including more than 24,000 customers in Nevada County.
