Gusty winds shake Sacramento Valley and Sierra mountains. How long will they last?

weather update

Gusty winds developing Tuesday morning across the Sacramento Valley and Sierra Nevada mountains are expected to continue all day and most of Wednesday.

The National Weather Service has issued wind advisories, in place through 6 p.m. Wednesday, for broad stretches of the valley including the Stockton, Modesto, Sacramento and Redding areas; and for the western slope of the northern Sierra mountains.

The valley could see sustained northerly winds between 15 and 30 mph, with gusts as high as 45 mph. The mountains will see northeast winds at about 20 to 30 mph, with gusts up to 50 mph possible.

A high wind warning cautioning of even more powerful winds is in effect for parts of the North Bay Area, near the mountains, through 9 a.m. Thursday. Gusts up to 65 mph are expected and could reach as high as 95 mph at higher peaks and ridges.

Gusts up to 30 mph have already been recorded early Tuesday morning in northern Sacramento County, and as high as 36 mph in Yolo County near Davis, the weather service said in social media posts. Forecasts show gusts in Sacramento should peak around 31 mph on Wednesday.

The weather service said gusts could be strong enough to down tree limbs or branches, potentially leading to some localized power outages. Drivers should also use extra caution on roadways.

High temperatures are expected to range from the upper 50s to low 60s this week near the capital, with overnight lows ranging from the low 40s to high 30s.

Near South Lake Tahoe, highs will warm up from the low 30s Tuesday and Wednesday to the low 50s by the weekend, forecasts show.

Northern California’s dry stretch will continue, with no precipitation in the forecast through the weekend.
