Warming centers to open in Sacramento and Elk Grove this week. Here’s where and when
Several warming centers will open across Sacramento, Elk Grove and Sacramento County this week for homeless residents, as Northern California faces below- or near-freezing temperatures each night through at least Friday.
Sacramento City Hall (915 I Street) will be open 8 p.m. to 8 p.m. through Saturday as a weather respite center for unsheltered residents, city officials said in a news release.
The county announced it will open two warming centers each night this Tuesday through Friday: the Department of Human Assistance annex at 1725 28th Street from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m., and Creekside Adult School 2641 Kent Drive from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m.
The city of Elk Grove will open the Wackford Community Complex (9014 Bruceville Road) as a warming center nightly Tuesday through Thursday, from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m.
Some churches and nonprofit organizations are also opening warming centers.
Capitol City Seventh-Day Adventist Church in Sacramento (6701 Lemon Hill Ave.) opened Monday as a warming center and will be open daily through Saturday night, 6 p.m. to 8 a.m. each day. And the Union Gospel Mission Sacramento men’s homeless shelter (400 Bannon Street) will be open nightly until further notice, from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Sacramento County is also activating its weather respite motel voucher program now through Saturday morning. The program has capacity for up to 100 rooms, reserved for those who are most vulnerable.
Pets are allowed at the two county sites but must be on a leash or in an animal container at all times. Pets are not allowed at the other warming centers.
Masks are required at all warming centers, in accordance with California’s state health orders for COVID-19 in shelter settings.
The National Weather Service predicts an overnight low of 32 degrees Tuesday night, 30 on Wednesday night, 32 on Thursday night and 33 on Friday night, before warming back to the low 40s by the weekend.
The cold snap and opening of the weather respite centers coincide with this week’s homeless point-in-time count, scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday nights.
