Despite the string of winter storms in December, Sacramento is starting off the new year with a record dry spell for this time of year, according to the National Weather Service in Sacramento.

The 52-day dry stretch, spanning from Jan. 8 to Feb. 28, is tied for the driest recorded period Sacramento has experienced in the wet season. And by the end of Tuesday, the city will break the current record of consecutive days without rain, which occurred in 2013 to 2014.

That makes 53 days without rain by the end of the day.

Cities across California are facing record or near record dryness for January and February, crucial months for improving the state’s drought.

Redding, about 162 miles away from the capital city, also had an extended period of dry weather with 49 days of no rain, from Jan. 8 to Feb. 25.

According to California snow surveys, the Northern Sierra and Central Sierra regions received below average snow water, which is necessary for California’s water supply.

Sacramento is forecasted to get some slight showers Wednesday night through Friday night, possibly ending this dry spell.

According to the NWS, temperatures will be at its highest Wednesday with 73 degrees and will drop to the 60s Thursday through Saturday. Nighttime lows will be around the 40s.
