Northern California could hit 20 degrees above average in yet another spring heat wave
Temperatures in Northern California will soar into the 90-degree range this week, marking this year’s second big early-spring heat wave, forecasts suggest.
The National Weather Service predicts highs in the upper 70s Monday and Tuesday in Sacramento will ratchet up, first to 80 degrees by Wednesday and then to 92 degrees by Thursday.
Forecasts show Friday hitting 90 before temperatures cool to the low 80s over the weekend.
The average high for this time of April is about 72 degrees, weather service records show. The all-time records for downtown Sacramento on April 7 and April 8 are 91 degrees, both set in 1989.
The capital city already smashed heat records last month, as Sacramento Executive Airport reached 84 degrees on March 22 and downtown hit 83 the following day.
Weather service forecasts show some areas farther north in the Sacramento Valley, like Chico, may hit 95 degrees late this week.
Officials advise caution for anyone who celebrates the hot weather on waterways like the American River. Though the air temperatures will be hot, lakes and rivers continue to run very cold this time of year.
The weather service reminded people to wear life jackets and to stay hydrated.
