Northern California rain will bring cooler Sacramento area temps — but not just yet

Weather update

It’ll be not-so-hot this weekend. But we still need to get through one more near 100-degree day.

The Sacramento region is expected to face gusty winds and hotter temperatures Wednesday, with the high climbing up to 97 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.

‘We cool right back down’

This temperature does “not meet any thresholds” for a heat advisory, as highs in the mid 90s are pretty common for June and July, said Courtney Carpenter, a weather service meteorologist.

“It’s just one hot day, and we cool right back down on Thursday,” Carpenter said.

Starting this weekend, a low-pressure system will be bringing some rain showers up north to areas like Shasta County, leading to cooler weather in the capital region.

“But for Sacramento and around here, [the system] will bring a big cool down,” she said.

On Friday and Saturday, temperatures in the area are expected to dip by more than 10 degrees, with highs in the upper 70s. And no chance of rain is predicted, with forecasts showing mostly clear, sunny skies throughout the week.

The end of week highs are considered below normal for this time of year, the meteorologist said.

Why has it felt windier?

The transition period from spring to early summer marks a windy time of year, Carpenter said, and this week is no exception. Gusts from the north are expected to reach up to 15 to 25 mph throughout the week.

Gusts may reach as high as 18 mph Wednesday night into Thursday, according to forecasts.

But due to a lack of precipitation this spring, it may feel “unusually windy,” according to the weather service.

“When it’s rainy, people notice the rain, but when it’s windy and nothing else, people notice the wind,” Carpenter said. “It’s a little bit of a perception thing.”

There is no rain predicted in the NWS Sacramento forecast for the next seven days.

Heading into the summer months, conditions are expected to remain dry with little rain.
