Delta breeze helps cool Sacramento after long heat wave. What’s expected in the week ahead?
Sacramento and surrounding areas will feel some relief from a weeklong heat wave as a Delta breeze helps cool things off a day after the city tied a record high.
Downtown Sacramento hit 106 degrees Saturday, matching the all-time mark for the date set in 1950, according to the National Weather Service.
Stockton hit 105, breaking the previous record high of 103 in 1950 and 1961. Redding’s high of 110 tied the mark reached in 1919, 1950 and 1988.
But “cooler” temperatures were expected Sunday, “with Valley highs this afternoon around 5 to 15 degrees less than yesterday,” the Sacramento office of the weather service tweeted Sunday morning. “Near the Delta, highs may be up to 20 degrees cooler!
“That said, it’s still a warm day so be sure to stay hydrated and take breaks in the shade if needed.”
Sunday’s high in Sacramento is forecast for 93 degrees, with an overnight low of 61. Temperatures are expected to rise to 99 on Monday, with highs remaining in the mid- to upper 90s leading up to next weekend.
Sacramento residents are benefiting from the Delta breeze, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association spokesperson Scott Rowe said. In the Delta, wind gusts may reach up to 35 mph near the water.
Those conditions create a low risk to life and property, according to the wind-threat description provided by the weather service. People are advised to secure loose objects and avoid using equipment that might create sparks.
Travis Air Force Base tends to be among the breeziest areas, but the wind will be relatively mild in Sacramento, Rowe said.
On Sunday, the Sacramento metro area was expected to see winds up to 15 mph at the most.
