For many, the cold weather is a cool embrace from the unrelenting heat waves of last summer. To others, the drop in temperature might feel grueling, as heavy winter coats and thick socks are piled on.

A reader reached out to The Sacramento Bee service journalism team wondering when there will be a happy medium in Sacramento. They asked: “How many more days/months of cold weather here in Sacto. before it gets warm again?”

When will Sacramento temperatures warm up?

Low temperatures will likely stay until spring of next year.

The winter season can last until March or into April, said Hannah Chandler-Cooley, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service. The coldest temperatures will be in December, January and February, with fluctuations in between.

According to weather data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the average max temperature in the downtown area in December and January is about 56 degrees with a minimum near 41. February’s average max is about 62 and minimum is near 53.

Temperatures will start increasing, Chandler-Cooley said, in March and April.

The average high for March is about 68 and low is about 47. In April, the typical high is about 74 and low is 49.
