How much rain and snow fell in Northern California? Here are Sacramento and Tahoe totals
Last weekend was a slippery one, as a wet and windy storm made its way through Northern California into the Sierra Nevada.
Roughly 1.71 inches of precipitation fell between Friday and Sunday in downtown Sacramento, said meteorologist Eric Kurth with the National Weather Service. Heavier amounts of rain fell in the Sacramento-area suburbs.
Rain totals for Sacramento and Tahoe region
Here are the Sacramento-area rain totals, according to the National weather Service:
- Folsom - 2.64 inches
- Citrus Heights - 2.12 inches
- Rocklin - 1.93 inches

Normal rainfall in downtown Sacramento over the month of December is 3.49 inches, said meteorologist Idamis Del Valle-Shoemaker with the National Weather Service. The area is well over its average precipitation total, currently sitting at 4.69 inches.
While the Sacramento area is gearing up for a week of much needed sun, remember nighttime will bring below-freezing temperatures.
Between three to five inches of rain, according to National Weather Service, fell in the Sierra Nevada. Kurth said some water is a mixture of both rain water and melted snow.
Areas west of Lake Tahoe in the Sierra Nevada, between Interstate 80 and Highway 50 like Danville, Georgetown and Grass Valley all received around 3.6 to 5.6 inches of rain.
How much snow fell in the Sierra Nevada?
Snow totals were even larger.
Nearly 6 feet of snow fell across the Sierra Nevada, National Weather Service wrote on its Twitter page, with the most snow at Sierra at Tahoe ski resort (5.8 feet) situated west of South Lake Tahoe.
Lake Tahoe-area ski resorts including Soda Springs, Palisades Tahoe and Sugar Bowl, plus Castle Peak mountain all received around 4 to 5 feet of snow.
If you plan to travel into the Sierra Nevada, expect slowdowns from last weekend’s snowy wet weather.
