What’s next for Sacramento weather? Another major storm headed for region this weekend

After Sacramento’s glimpse of dry weather Thursday, rain — along with a flood watch and wind advisory —returns for the weekend.

The atmospheric river storm is expected to begin Friday, according to the National Weather Service, with the first wave bringing moderate to heavy rain and mountain snow. There will be heavier precipitation in the second wave on Saturday morning.

The service issued a flood watch for 10 a.m. Saturday to 7 a.m. Sunday, and a wind advisory from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday.

Potential flooding can happen in areas including Carquinez Strait and Delta, Sacramento Valley, southwestern Shasta County to western Colusa County and northern San Joaquin Valley. And wind gusts are expected up to 55 mph in the Sacramento Valley, Carquinez Strait and Delta, northern San Joaquin Valley and northeast Foothills.

Meteorologists advise that people be prepared for flooding, take caution with driving and secure outdoor objects.

Weekend forecast

Showers will begin Friday after 10 a.m., amounting to about 0.50 to 0.75 inches of rain, with gusts up to 26 mph. The high for the day is around 54 degrees and the low is near 51 degrees. There may be a potential thunderstorm at night, bringing 0.25 to 0.50 inches of rain and wind speeds as high as 26 mph.

On Saturday, rain and thunderstorms are forecasted after 4 p.m. Up to one inch of rain is expected and gusts can get up to 37 mph. High temperatures are about 55 with a low near 45. More thunderstorms could begin before 10 p.m.

Showers are likely to continue into Sunday after 10 a.m. and at night with a high near 53 and a low of about 46. Monday, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, may also see wet weather. There’s a chance of showers and highs are near 52 and lows around 41.

Mountain travel

The weather service says travel will be “very difficult to impossible” in the Tahoe area this weekend. The region is expecting up to 6 feet of snow.
